Organic solar cells are the latest development in solar technology. Organic photovoltaic (OPV) solar cells are a greener version of their traditional counterparts. It can be put into two categories: small molecule OPV cells and Polymer-based OPV cells. Small molecule OPV cells absorb in the visible and near infrared portion using molecules. Polymer based OPV cells on the other hand use long chained molecular systems[1].
Made from carbon based materials, organic solar cells are manufactured through low cost printing technology. In addition to the low cost in production, there is also an abundance of materials that makes it easier to manufacture.
Another advantage of organic solar cells over the traditional cells is that they weigh less and are flexible. This reduces the risk of overbearing your roof with a solar panel installation. Aesthetic wise, organic solar cells can be manufactured in a selection of colors or even be transparent. This gives homeowners some choice in color options.
According to the US department of energy, OPV solar cells have the potential to provide electricity at a lower cost than their traditional counterparts[2].
Unfortunately, organic solar cells have an energy loss problem. This won’t be a problem forever as researchers are still working on fixing the energy loss problem. Work is being done to increase efficiency and lifetime.
Research is still being done to finalize organic solar cells for the commercial market. There is no time estimate for when it will be available for purchase but we hope soon.
