The SAVE (Sensible Accounting to Value Efficiency) Act, recently passed the senate and is being finalized to become an amendment to the Energy Bill. The Energy Bill is a layout of the principles regarding the environment that include creating new clean energy jobs and technologies, making America more energy independent, and reducing carbon emissions.1 Now, the SAVE Act will become a part of this.
The SAVE Act is important because it helps people that are looking to purchase an energy efficient home as well as homeowners that would like to make renovations to their home to save energy. That can range from replacing windows, furnaces, or even adding solar panels to their homes.1 Not only will making these changes help to save energy and lower the utility bill, but it is extremely beneficial to the environment that more and more homes in the United States are making these changes. This Act will help to provide financing for home-energy improvements, reduce the cost of utility bills, and give credit to home buyers if they are purchasing either an Energy Star Certified home or Zero Energy Ready home. A Zero Energy Ready home falls under the definition by energy.gov for Zero Energy Buildings, “an energy-efficient building where, on a source energy basis, the actual annual delivered energy is less than or equal to the on-site renewable exported energy.”2 So as long as the home produces as much or more energy than what is being delivered to the home, it qualifies as a Zero Energy home and can receive all of the benefits I just mentioned.
This Act is much needed because before, energy efficient homes could be quite costly. Now, buyers and owners of these homes will be rewarded for helping the environment. Along with the benefits previously mentioned, homeowners that decide to make these energy saving renovations will see an advantage in home appraisal as it will become required that energy features of a home are added to the value of an appraisal.
Now that more and more people will be making the change to having energy efficient homes due to the benefits from this Act, it will greatly decrease the usage of energy in our country and help our environment tremendously.
